Apparently each individual baby is unique, which I guess is why we give them individual names. Our last baby came out screaming and pooped three times within a few hours to protest his APGAR score. Our newest baby made just enough noise to get a nine on his APGAR, and then promptly took a nap – so we shall name this one Desmond Marshall. A nice relaxing name for a nice relaxing baby. (Both like to be swaddled and rocked, so they can have the same surname of Cooley).
The long story:
Our appointment at the hospital was at 7:15, which means we strolled into the hospital around 7:40 – no hurry on our end, not like the baby was going anywhere anyway. We apologized for being late, but the nurses said they were having a very easy morning and the schedule was wide open – so no worries there.
Many different nurses asked us the same questions over and over. So we just coasted through admissions and prep. Also, the epidural insertion goes much smoother when you are not having contractions; at least that was my impression as an observer. I base most of that statement on the fact that shortly after it was inserted I got to go to breakfast.
After the meds kicked in they wheeled us into the delivery room, and I swear one of the orderlies was still in his pajamas. From the room next door we could faintly hear tropical beach music. The doctors did their magic behind the curtain and not long after out came a brand new baby.
Desmond Marshall Cooley was 20 ¾ inches long and 8lbs and 0.9oz. Again, the nurse refused to round the weight up, but Desmond didn’t care, he just sneezed and then took a nap. He slept through most of his first bath and through his shots. He has redish hair, a furrowed brow, a weak chin, and no cowlick.
Once dry the three of us retired to our room, where we each settled into our assigned locations, and all three of us took a nap. Danielle was in the hospital bed, Desmond in his bassinet, and me on the loveseat couch. (Another indication of our order of importance, Danielle has five ID bands, Desmond has three, and I only have one – and it doesn’t even have my name on it.)
I would type more, but a picture is worth a thousand words, and nap time is fast approaching.
